Since Dr. Hanley Horwitz of Clarence opened the Center for Plastic Surgery in 1978, plastic surgery has evolved. From reconstructive to cosmetic procedures, plastic surgery is for all ages and people.
With recent reality shows such as “Extreme Makeover,” plastic surgery perhaps is becoming more popular and accepted.
The Center for Plastic Surgery, 5609-5611 Main St., has experienced that growth so much so that it has expanded into a third building at 5604 Main St. in the Village of Williamsville.
The expansion doubles the square footage from 5,500 square feet at 5609 and 5611 Main St. to 6,000 square feet at 5604 Main St.
“We cover the entire spectrum,” said Dr. Zvi Sharf of Amherst. “We’re probably the only group in the community that offers all services in one place.”
He, along with Dr. David P. Rigan of Clarence, Dr. Jonathan A. Graff of Amherst and Dr. Raymond O. Schultz of Elma, decided to expand the center for just that reason — to provide one convenient location for clients.
“We like our location, but it (was getting) too small for the number of clients,” Sharf said. “We do it for the convenience and privacy of our patients.”
With warm, earth tones, fireplaces, a water feature and flat screen TVs, the foyer welcomes patients into the renovated building. The renovation was led by Silvestri Architects PC and was recently completed.
The left side of the building is dedicated to medical procedures, while the right side is for skin care treatments such as Botox and microderm abrasions. Any procedures that require anesthesia are held in local hospitals.
Although the upstairs is currently unused, there are plans to add offices or even a staffed, overnight facility for out-of-town patients. The center commonly treats patients from Arizona, Florida and even Israel.
Although the center has primarily consolidated its offices at its Main Street location and closed its Northwoods office on Robinson Road, it has maintained its Orchard Park location at 3725 N. Buffalo Road.
The partnership of four doctors gives patients a full spectrum of specialties. Sharf, who joined the group in ’88, and Rigan, who joined in ’92, specialize in aesthetic, or cosmetic, surgery; while Graff, who joined in ’90, specializes in general plastic surgery and children. Schultz joined in ’98.
With continual improvements in technology and medicine, the center offers the most up-to-date equipment and procedures. Nowadays, many of the skin care techniques are preventative and are non-invasive.
“It goes together,” Sharf said, explaining that many clients have chemical peels or microderm abrasions before having surgery.
The doctors stress that its center is a true MedSpa, with prescription-based procedures, compared to some area salons that have a plastic surgeon on staff for a limited time. Many of the non-invasive, skin care procedures are for people who don’t necessarily need plastic surgery but some minor smoothing over. It’s relatively inexpensive and quicker — patients can have it done on their lunch hour and return to work — compared to plastic surgery that usually takes a few weeks to recuperate.
“Plastic surgery isn’t just for (the rich),” Sharf said. “Affordable treatment is available to everybody.”
